Library Foundation’s Very Successful Fair Oaks Campaign

The Redwood City Library Foundation announced the successful completion of its “Fair Oaks Library Campaign for Books.”  The campaign raised an astonishing $200,000 to purchase new books and materials for its smallest library, located in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood. To the children and adults in the North Fair Oaks Neighborhood, the library is indeed a cherished place of learning, providing books and materials, computers, literacy programs and helpful librarians.

The Foundation raised the funds through challenge grants, a series of special events, and personal solicitation. All the money was used to purchase children‘s books and DVDs, books for adults, English language audio materials, and music for children and adults.

This campaign was a remarkable success – and follows a tradition of success for the Foundation, which has raised $2.2 million since it was launched in 1998 to enhance library services, collections and programs. Projects funded by the Foundation include the award-winning Traveling Storytime, the Teen Homework Center, story times in all four libraries, and the entire “opening collection” for the Redwood Shores Library.

Woodside High School Present Aida

Ancient Egypt comes to Woodside High School!

Be sure to get tickets to this fantastic show put on by Woodside High School – Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA is a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

With a pop-rock score that features stirring ballads and rousing choral numbers, Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA is a modern crowd pleaser that embraces multi-cultural casting and exuberant dancing, staging and singing. Presented under the direction of drama teacher, Barry Woodruff and a cast of over 40 students.

City’s GIS Now Features 2011 Aerials

GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a location – such as streets, water features, parks, census data, parcel information, and more – and turns it into visual layers on a map, while also  providing detailed data about that location. Redwood City has a robust GIS available to the community at, and it’s been updated with new aerials taken in 2011. The old aerial view was from 2005, and a lot has changed so this is a welcome improvement.

The aerial images were taken in December, 2011, and cover Redwood City and its sphere of influence (North Fair Oaks, Selby, Emerald Hills, etc.). And, they also cover the City of San Carlos (which is important since Redwood City manages the San Carlos Fire Department).

Take a look at the new aerials, and try out the many really cool features of Redwood City’s Community GIS at
