Caltrain Signal Testing – Horn Use / Reminder of Lunar New Year Fest Tomorrow

Hello – two more quick items for you this afternoon.

First: people who live near the Caltrain tracks in Redwood City should have received a notice from Caltrain about some signal testing that is taking place tonight and tomorrow, as part of their Signal Optimization Program. This signal testing requires that the train horn is sounded more frequently than usual, for a limited amount of time, so some of you may hear that increase in noise between 6 am and 11 am tomorrow (Saturday). I’ve put the text of the Caltrain notice below.

And second: don’t forget tomorrow’s Lunar New Year Festival on Courthouse Square, between 11 am and 4 pm. Lots of great family stuff, please go to for all the details.

Caltrain Signal Optimization Project – notice sent to addresses in a half-mile radius of the tracks

Dear Caltrain Neighbor:

The Signal Optimization Project will design and install new signals on the railroad to allow Caltrain to run trains closer and faster, while maintaining safe braking distances.

To implement this project and assure the signals are functioning properly, Caltrain must test the signal system from midnight Feb. 22 to 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at crossings in Redwood City, Atherton and Menlo Park, weather permitting.

During this time period, Caltrain will use extra trains to test the performance of the signals. Engineers will be required to sound the train horns as they approach the crossings, per Federal Railroad Administration regulations.

The additional horn noise is scheduled only from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Feb. 23.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
