City Council Approves Funding to Kainos for Special Needs Affordable Housing

Redwood City, CA – At its April 8 meeting, the City Council of Redwood City approved a funding agreement to provide $450,000 in Federal grant funds toward purchase of a special needs affordable housing unit by the nonprofit Kainos Home and Training Center.

Annually, the City sends out a Request for Proposals for eligible projects to be funded with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Home Investment Partnership (HOME) funds. These grant fund sources are available to organizations providing assistance to low and moderate income households residing within Redwood City, including affordable housing. Site acquisition of affordable rental housing and special needs housing is one of the highest priority goals identified in Redwood City’s housing Consolidated Plan and subsequent Annual Action Plans.

Earlier this year, the City received a funding proposal from Kainos to assist with the purchase of a single family home, which will provide permanent, affordable supportive rental housing for four adults with developmental disabilities. The City’s Housing and Human Concerns Committee recommended approval of the acquisition to be funded with $450,000 of Federal HOME funds, and the Council gave final approval on April 8.

“This project is a small but important way for Redwood City to help increase our community’s supply of affordable housing for persons with special needs,” said Redwood City Mayor Alicia Aguirre. “It’s also part of ensuring a wide variety of housing types and sizes in Redwood City, to meet the diversity of needs throughout the community.”

This special needs home will provide long term safe, affordable, and accessible housing for these adults with developmental disabilities. Kainos staff will assist residents with managing medical appointments, shopping, budgeting, cooking, cleaning, planning activities, and other support needed for them to live active and independent lives. The house is close to other Kainos residential homes for access to support services and is close to transit and walking distance to local commerce.

Kainos’ mission is to provide a wide variety of residential, vocational and related services to adults with developmental disabilities so that each individual may maximize his or her potential and become an active member of the community.
