Redwood City’s Plastic Bag Ban Starts October 1, 2013

Good afternoon –

As I’m sure you know, a number of cities on the peninsula, as well as San Mateo County, implemented a reusable bag ordinance today, April 22 (also known as a plastic bag ban).

Please note that Redwood City’s plastic bag ban does NOT take effect today. Instead, the City Council wanted to give businesses six months to use up existing stocks of those bags – Redwood City’s plastic bag ban starts on October 1, 2013.

This ordinance bans distribution of single-use carryout plastic bags by all retailers except restaurants and nonprofits, and does not include protective bags for produce or meat, dry-cleaning, and newspapers, among other exemptions. The ordinance does require retailers to charge a minimum of 10¢ per paper bag used (25¢ as of 2015). Enforcement will be complaint-based, and conducted by San Mateo County. More details are on the City’s reusable bag ordinance information page.

Please  share this information with others – Redwood City’s plastic bag ban starts on October 1, 2013.

Thanks,

~ malcolm
