Good morning –
Please read this clarification about the timing of Redwood City’s plastic bag ban.
A number of cities on the peninsula, and San Mateo County, implemented a plastic bag ban on April 22. While Redwood City’s ordinance will not be enforced until October 1, you should know that stores are allowed to implement the ban and start charging for paper bags earlier.
Several stores are doing that right now, so I wanted to let you know that this is OK, the ordinance permits them to start the plastic bag ban prior to October 1.
You’ll recall that this ordinance bans distribution of single-use carryout plastic bags by all retailers except restaurants and nonprofits, and does not include protective bags for produce or meat, dry-cleaning, and newspapers, among other exemptions. The ordinance requires retailers to charge a minimum of 10¢ per paper bag used (25¢ as of 2015). Enforcement will be complaint-based, and conducted by San Mateo County. More details are on the City’s reusable bag ordinance information page.
